My current thinking is that the problems I'm seeing here are not
directly related to the bug we're trying to fix. It looks like
sillyrename is still just plain broken a'la your email entitled:

    2.6.38-rc2... NFS sillyrename is broken...

...I'll plan to keep an eye out for the fix from Nick, and re-test this
when it hits.
