Not sure I understand how it would hurt my eyes.

I could not even think of any reason to have such functionality, but
then I thought NetworkManager.  If there is no link on an interface then
NM will remove the IP address off that interface.  Is the purpose of
keeping it up to keep NM from removing the address?  What would be the
purpose of keeping the interface in the UP state if nothing was
connected?
