The freeze doesn't seem related, especially as you're seeing it with the
3com card too.

No, the 2.4.21-pre series hasn't caught up with driver development (yet).
I'll send you the current driver. Just replace the old via-rhine.c with the
new one. ... That should take care of some of your problems.
