Well, I've got ethtool working on the tg3 (hooray!) but now I
essentially have to run two programs :

mii-tool for the existing tulip and eepro100 cards I have
ethtool for the tg3

(The chipset support for ethtool is really small)

Is working on
adding more chipsets? Or should I try to make mii-diag work with
the tg3?

I know I can change to the e100 from the eepro100, but that's only
as of 2.4.20 if I want to stick with the stock kernel :)

As of 2.4.20, eepro100 supports ethtool (and several other chipsets too).

I have a patch for tulip, but it only works for tulips with MII not all tulips, so I haven't applied it yet...
