$ /sbin/ip link help
Usage: ip link set DEVICE { up | down | arp { on | off } |
	                     dynamic { on | off } |
	                     multicast { on | off } | txqueuelen PACKETS |
	                     name NEWNAME |
	                     address LLADDR | broadcast LLADDR |
	                     mtu MTU }
       ip link show [ DEVICE ]

You might note with some interest the mtu parameter.

Works with 2.2.x and later.

(The 2.2.x kernel was a total rewrite of the 2.0.x networking code.
/sbin/ip is the new age version of ifconfig - which is now obselete).
