You might try visiting the Novell listserv archives and searching on
"3300" ...http://lsv.syr.edu/archives/novell.html

There have been extended discussions there over the years about 
problems with 3300 switches and 3c90x NICs. Many of the problems
relate to exactly what you're describing.

For whatever it's worth, I wouldn't own a 3Com switch....
