2.4 and multiple interfaces on the same subnet

I have a machine with two intefaces on the same subnet. Due to the
"interesting" ARP behaviour of Linux in this case, every interface
will reply to ARP requests for any of the interfaces. And I really
don't want the traffic intended for the 1000Mbps interface going to
the 100Mbps interface.

In recent 2.2 kernels, it was possible to fix this by doing

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/hidden

but 2.4 doesn't have that option. I might be missing something, but
it seems that 2.4 is stuck with the undesirable ARP behaviour.

It doesn't look like it will be hard to port the code for the "hidden"
option from 2.2 to 2.4, but before I try, does anyone already have a
patch for this? Have the networking gurus ruled out support of the
"hidden" option in 2.4?
