As a third option you can make use of xdmcp. That way your client will
get the hosts windowmanager / background etc. too. type 'man xdm' to
find out more about getting the remote machine to present a login
window.

To start a session on the remote host, start X as:
X -query <remotehost name or IP>

securitywise: xdmcp does no encryption, but you can setup a tunnel (e.g.
cipe) and route your X traffic through that. Be sure to tell xdm on the
host which machines to accept and selectively add host on the client
with xhost +<host>

Dunno about SATAN, as for X, just use OpenSSH and configure it to
ForwardX11 on the client and server /etc/sshd_config and /etc/ssh_config
then use ssh to connect to the host machine and run the programs. if
that's not a valid choice "xhost +<hostname>" and "export
DISPLAY=<ip>:0.0" will most likely do the trick although the OpenSSH
method would be preferred as it's a bit easier to do and it encrypts the
entire session.
