That's right! Don't throw the towel Devyn! Bart and Stas are cool guys (together with many others in this mailing list) and they will help you out getting around knowing the code, guiding you to implement the improvements you may have in mind. You may just start by telling what would you think would be good to implement, etc. A new stable 1.4.x tarball would be a nice thing though, if somebody could help with that...
