Reason behind not accounting hugetlbfs pages on RSS

Hello,

on 25ee01a2fca02dfb5a3 (mm: hugetlb: proc: add hugetlb-related fields to /proc/PID/smaps)
it's stated that hugetlbfs pages aren't accounted on RSS or PSS due historical
reasons. Naoya Horiguchi (patch's author) can't remember the details on that.
Anyone knows the reason or has a pointer to where I can look?
