Hans, There was already a au8522.c in the master branch before Devin's patches -- au8522.c is located in drivers/media/dvb/frontends -- it is an ATSC/QAM demodulator modulator. Devin had renamed au8522.c to au8522_dig.c , so that it can be built with au8522_decoder.c into a single module. It is important that this remain a single module, because there is state being shared between the analog and digitial sides of this device. This is a hybrid demodulator, the first of it's kind within our codebase.
