Thanks for explaining.  That makes sense.

I agree that it doesn't sound like enough of a show-stopper to warrant
inclusion in -stable.  This build system UI bug has existed since
v2.6.31-rc1~335^2~1 (kbuild: add generic --set-str option to
scripts/config, 2009-05-25).
