I think I missed replying to this.

I would guess it is a pair of muxes - but I do not know for sure. The 
data-sheet I've seen is not too detailed. The "block diagram" I see 
shows the photo sensors followed by four ADCs. This, however, is just a 
very rough picture and it does not show the muxes. I guess it is there 
just to illustrate the functionality more than to really explain the 
hardware.
