PROBLEM: "lost interrupt (Status 0x50)" from DVD drive, long wait on 2.6.31 till 2.6.32rc6

Long wait on boot while scanning DVD drive

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
The boot process hangs for a variable amount of time while scanning
"ata4.00: ATAPI: MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ-850S, 1.10, max UDMA/33". This
typically takes two minutes or so, sometimes much more (so much more
that I'm not willing to wait).

Encountered this issue on upgrading to Ubuntu9.10. Tried in stock
kernel and got the same result. All 2.6.30 versions that I tried had
no problem (latest that I tried was stock 2.6.30.9), all 2.6.31 and
later did (earliest I tried was stock 2.6.31rc1, latest stock
2.6.32rc6).

I saw from a Google search that the same symptom occurred some time in
the early 2.6.20s, but those issues all seemed to be solved by
upgrading to a (then) sufficiently recent kernel. Clearly this did not
help for me.

I decided to send to the (S)ATA maintainer and mailing list. I hope that's OK.
