Don't know what the issue might be, but I use a 1.42Ghz PPC iBook running Ubuntu and I manage to playback HD channels no problems.
I've got a little USB Dongle (Afatech 9005 I nabbed off eBay for 20$), no inbuilt MPEG-2 decoder or anything fancy.
