This is DEFINITELY recursive - I left it running all night and it was still 
doing it in the morning.

I did notice that v4l has a soft link oss which points to . and thought that 
might be the cause and commented the creation out in the makefile, but it 
wasn't that, as it still happened.

Also to be accurate, it seems to be inside the linux headers - at least this 
is how it starts:-

./scripts/make_myconfig.pl
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/v4l-dvb/v4l'
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/v4l-dvb/v4l'
creating symbolic links...
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.16-2-686/build SUBDIRS=/root/v4l-dvb/v4l  modules
