Major difference between KDE and Gnome 3 from what I can tell. My 10 year old P4 with 1G ram had no problems with KDE, but was unusable with Gnome3. Kde does have lots of "how much cpu would you like to use" settings, though if you do turn off all the eye candy one wonders why use KDE... The answer seems to be stability. I have in this house machines running both xfce and KDE. There seem to be some applications (mostly video) that run on any machine running KDE and only some of the machines when running xfce.
