if you software monitoring then the audio flows like this:

  -> audio interface (soundcard) -> CPU -> application -> CPU -> audio
interface ->

if the application is a JACK client, then the delay is as i previously stated.

any extra delay can only come from plugins and other processing.
ardour doesn't do any thing that would add more delay by itself.
