Ah, the usual Linux music player run-around... Lately I've found myself enjoying the simplicity of MOC (http://moc.daper.net/). It automatically uses Jack if it's running, and if not goes directly for ALSA. It's terminal/curses based, very simple and lightweight with a Midnight-Commander-like interface. Being able to ssh to it without X-forwarding is nice.
