I tried Sonata as well, the search also was annoying for me, but for
another reason. It uses a rather short timeout after you stop typing to
start searching. If you don't type like hell it just starts to search,
and with a lot of songs this search takes some time and makes the whole
thing unresponsive.

it's written in python luckily, so even I managed to at least increase
the timeout and just restart it. Hacking other functionality should be
relatively simple as well.
