I'm on Debian and I have to do this as superuser:
mount -t usbfs usbfs /proc/bus/usb/

Maybe it works for you too?
Then, instead of using a better script like Folderol (thanks for sharing!), I was using this line in my preparejack.sh script:
fxload -I /etc/firmware/ezusbmidi2x2.ihx -D /proc/bus/usb/004/002
(I have the midisport-firmware package installed)
Somehow fxload always seems to send the .ihx to the right bus, no matter if the midisport is really on that bus. 
QjackCtl here shows the midisport2x2, but today "lsusb" shows me this:

Bus 004 Device 003: ID 0763:1110 Midiman MidiSport 1x1

I don't have a MidiSport 1x1, and my 2x2 is not shown by lsusb, but it works perfectly. (I tested both inputs, and only one output.)
