Very low input from accoustic guitar pickup

Folks,

I'm connecting an accoustic bass guitar that has an internal pickup
to a 1010LT card (inout 3 for instance) using a 1/4" cable and a 1/4"
to RCA converter. The guitar has volume, bass, treeble controls.
Unless I crank up the guitar's volume to the max there's no much sound
that goes in. The appropriate ADC channel setting in Envy24 is at the
max.

Pushing the volume to the max also brings noise with it. What I
would like to do is to set it at about 5-6 and have some room in Ardour.

Does this mean that I have to plug some kind of impedence adapter
between the guitar and the 1010LT ?

Thanks,

Al
