Given that I'm considering building a new machine, can you point to 
references please?  I wasn't aware any 3D GFX manufacturer had released 
any significant specs/code...

You're not wasting your time, Lee.  I don't own a copy of MS Windows 
(nor could I countenance a 'backup' from a friend).  I run Linux, and 
that's all.
