Also...the oldest working computer we
have here is old System76 Starling netbook, powered by a blazing
Intel Atom processor with a whopping 2GB of RAM and a 4800rpm
250GB hard drive. It was my wife's main machine until its
inability to do anything useful while driving a 1920x1080 FHD
monitor got in the way.
It's currently running 32-bit Debian
11. It functioned as my audio player when I didn't want to bring
my personal laptop into the office. Of course, courtesy of COVIDry
and retirement, it hasn't been in an office for years, still I use
it for playing audio files when I want my Dell dedicating its
horsepower to other things. ;)
The netbook's display resolution is
800x600, I haven't found many current GUI audio production tools
that tolerate that small screen.
So, happy hunting for another machine!

System76 hardware works fine with Linux, comes without Windows.
My wife's Lenovo works fine running Ubuntu. I think we paid ability $500 for it.
My Dell XPS15 works fine running Debian. My particular configuration came in at $3000 but cheaper configurations are available.
Good luck and happy hunting!

The battery only lasted long enough for a brief flicker of the 'on' LED. Also I've now discovered some of the keys aren't working. Having said that, I do very much appreciate all the help you've given, and have learned a lot more about modern laptops! So, the next question is, can anyone suggest a reasonably inexpensive laptop that plays well with Linux?
