Alas, not true. Alsamixer does precisely that (with no arguments) on my system
where the default ALSA device is Pulse.
Interesting, "default" in alsa in my case (in alsamixer) points to hw:0
even though pulse is running and works. default in qasmixer points to
pulse.
I guess the answer is it depends...
