The serial drivers compiled into the kernel should suffice to support
PCI ID        SubsystemID    Name
 ----------    ---------    ---------    --------------
  11c1:0480    1668:0500    Communication controller: Ageren Systems Venus Modem

$ sudo wvdialconf
should report detection of the modem.
If so, with:
$ sudo edit /etc/wvdial.conf
edit in your personal infor on the lines beginning with  ;
deleting the symbols ; < >
Then you should be able to dialout with
$ sudo wvdial
