Please first try an ordinary modem dialout before fax.
The 0x11c11040 chipset may not support fax under Linux as the true
modem port is a /dev/pts/N
FAXing require SOUND capabilities, and I'm not sure whether psuedo
ports /dev/pts/N have that sophistication yet.

Some Smartlink chipsets working with the slmodemd helper do support fax.
For guidance on this FAX usage, get from
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ get faxing.tar.gz. It has
samples for a modem using port /dev/ttySL0.

But if you need really robust FAX support, best buy a
Hardware/Controller chipset modem.
3COM/US Robotics does produce one. Also there are the Agere/LSI Venus
chipset modems.
