I've installed Agere LTmodem in 10.10 using latest martian-full-20100123
but cannot dial out either as user or root. Both sudo wvdial and sudo
gnome-ppp indicate error as follows:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot open /dev/ttySM0: Input/output error - on subsequent wvdial
-No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/ttySM0: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/ttySM0: No such file or directory

I have as root investigated /dev/ttySM0 file as follows:

In 10.10 link is broken to "/dev/pts/1" which doesn't exist
THIS SEEMS TO BE THE PROBLEM - solution is beyond me!

In 9.10 link is to "/dev/pts/0" which exists

HISTORY

I have followed MARTIAN FOR LUCENT AGERE MODEM TUTORIAL of 23/5/2008 by
Mark Rijckenberg
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=804378
to install and set up Agere LTmodem in Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.10 and now
10.10 as /dev/ttySM0

I identified modem and installing correct drivers for modem,
edited /etc/wvdial as detailed and can dial out successfully from
terminal by command sudo wvdial or gnome-ppp in 9.10 which I have
currently retained until I can dialout from 10.10

wvdial.config file in 10.10 is identical to 9.10 as follows

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Carrier Check = no
Stupid mode = 1
Modem Type = Analog Modem
ISDN = 0
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
New PPPD = yes
Phone = 0198331341
Modem = /dev/ttySM0
Username = ******@adam.com.au
Password = ******
Baud = 460800
