Frank

In principle  0x10573057 is supported.
A first step is to install the sl-modem-daemon package .
At http://packages.ubuntu.com/ used the Search window with
sl-modem-daemon package
sl-modem-source is not necessary. as the driver is hte already on
board snd-hda-intel, audio+modem driver

Under Linux with the package copied to your home folder, install with:
$ sudo dpkg -i sl*.deb
This will activate the modem, which should then be detected with:
$ sudo wvdialconf
This is a first functionality check on the modem itself.
Activation will be automatic on subsequent bootups

However there is a question as to whether UNDER Linux, the slmodemd
helper + snd-intel-hda driver does provide for fax functionality.
I am in fact doubful

However there is a package faxing.tar.gz at
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ which can provide some
guidance.
But the outstanding problem is that this modem uses ports in the nwer
/dev/pts/N  family.
And I am not certain that they have evolved to the point of having the
necessary SOUND support for faxing under Linux.

If you need really robust FAX support, best purchase one of the
Controller Chipset (hardware) modems
See below,

Please send further requests to the List, whereat there may be more
FAX expertise than I have.

==============
 Controller chipsets are used in the most expensive modems and are supported.
  They utilize the same serial drivers included with kernel+module
installations,
  and most commonly one of the ports /dev/ttyS0_thru_3.
  Such chipsets are produced by 3Com, AgereSystems (the Venus chipset),
  Topic Semiconductor Corp., and others. But the same companies may
  produce unsupported WinModems. Do not depend on the Brand Name.
  Look for an explicit statement of Linux support
