It fails to background. Ubuntu has some work to do with that init script. I have to manually start it with a combination of calling slmodemd from one term and then do sl-modem-daemon from another. Im guessing that none of the modem/dialer/fax programs will work if they dont detect a dial tone. How do I fake a dial tone? Regardless, to achieve what I am attempting looks like this might be more appropriate for an ALSA list or forum. I'll try there and post any findings here. Eric
