The following suggests that the agrmodem messed up the kernel:

and the kernel has to be rebooted. The 'rmmod' will not
do the trick.

My guess is that the binary blob in the agrsmodem driver
may not be compatible with some of the power-saving
features in the recent linux kernels (2.6.32 and up). 
Whether those features can be disabled or configured
not to interfere with the driver remains to be
investigated.
