Okay, well I can't suggest much else, sorry (I use a different agrsm
driver, for a different modem).

Something is holding the modem open. Pppd or wvdial, etc. You'll need
to kill it before you can reload the modules.

It's crashed here, after checking the battery status (and presumably
trying to go into power-saving mode). So, the solution probably
involves changing power-saving options, but I am not experienced in
that area. You've already tried disabling power-saving on the sound
(modem) card, so maybe the next step to try is disabling APM in the
kernel or BIOS.
