Sorry I replied too fast, before reading the long saga, just on the
ground of the current mailing.
You can see in the saga that the ISP did send sa login prompt, but
rejected the login pair.
If you are sure about your username/pwd (respecting upper lower case
etc...) then the detailed debug messages probability report a chap/pap
incompatibility.
Perhaps one of you Anotonio or Peyton truncated this in the last post quote:

This shows that it tried to connect, but failed because of ??? reason.
I hope other users can recommend strategies to get this going. But
for now, I can only recommend checking the DOCs/ folder for
wvdial.txt. You may add a line "Carrier Check = no" and see if it
makes any difference, and or "Stupid Mode = yes" also.

I seem to be making progress ... up to a point. I can connect after a
loooong wait but then the authentication goes south. I spent the morning
with my dsl provider ATT trying to get info about their dialup services. The
username and password are what I was given this morning. Here is how it
looks. Any ideas? Is the line in wvdial: "--> Cannot get information for
serial port." significant?
