Try to read the above page and if > for some reason, it still does not work, please write back. Are you > using SLMODEMD.gcc4.3-alsa-1.20.tar.gz? Thank you for responding Antonio, I had previously seen that link in one of my scroogle searches... But I wasn't sure how much of it applied because it was talking Kubuntu 7.10 & I'm using Xubuntu 9.10, Also it listed a slightly different vendor id 0x10573055 vs. 0x10573057. But in any case Since you pointed it out to me I tried to follow its advice. First I ensured lib32asound2 was installed UnderTree =-> apt-get install lib32asound2 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done lib32asound2 is already the newest version. lib32asound2 set to manually installed. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. UnderTree =-> Then I checked the slmodemd version UnderTree =-> slmodemd --version SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Feb 1 2010 19:59:11 UnderTree =-> Then since that hadn't been working, I opened synaptic and searched for the Ubuntu package name of "sl-modem-daemon"... Found and installed it! Then: UnderTree =-> slmodemd --version SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Sep 14 2009 00:38:05 UnderTree =-> Now I get the same half way there results as before without needing to manually run slmodemd any more. In fact I can't if I wanted to now: UnderTree =-> slmodemd -c USA --alsa hw:0,6 error: alsa setup: cannot open playback device 'hw:0,6': Device or resource busy error: cannot setup device `hw:0,6' Previously wvdialconf had detected the modem because I'd had the above slmodemd command running in another terminal. Just the same way as I'd had it running before I'd run wvdial itself. Now wvdial dials out on the modem without taking that step... But just like before, it's as if the modem was a send only device, because I can empirically test that it is in fact dialing up the (dialup ISP). But it's not hearing either the carrier nor the attempted handshake from the ISP's modem... I thought I'd try a different dialer to see if the problem was wvdial itself... But searching karmic's available dialers via synaptic (search for 'ppp') didn't offer many actual dialers. The gnome offering says it uses wvdial as a back end. So I can't see bothering with that just to get a GUI interface when I prefer TUI interfaces anyway... I don't really want dial on demand anyway. I want dial (and hangup) when 'commanded' so that pretty much leaves pppconfig/pon/poff & kppp UnderTree =-> plog -23 Apr 30 10:23:06 XubuntuMe2010 pppd[2406]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0 Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: abort on (BUSY) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: abort on (NO CARRIER) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: abort on (VOICE) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: abort on (NO DIALTONE) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: abort on (NO DIAL TONE) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: abort on (NO ANSWER) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: abort on (DELAYED) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: send (ATZ Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 X3 &C0 &D2 +FCLASS=0^M) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: expect (OK) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: ATZ Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 X3 &C0 &D2 +FCLASS=0^M^M Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: OK Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: -- got it Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: send (ATDT7340102^M) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: expect (CONNECT) Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: ^M Apr 30 10:23:07 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: ATDT7340102^M^M Apr 30 10:23:30 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: NO CARRIER Apr 30 10:23:30 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: -- failed Apr 30 10:23:30 XubuntuMe2010 chat[2409]: Failed (NO CARRIER) Apr 30 10:23:30 XubuntuMe2010 pppd[2406]: Script /usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/provider finished (pid 2408), status = 0x5 Apr 30 10:23:30 XubuntuMe2010 pppd[2406]: Connect script failed Apr 30 10:23:31 XubuntuMe2010 pppd[2406]: Exit.
