Smartlink modem on Ubuntu karmic

I'm having issues with a smartlink modem (LM-I56N) running on karmic.
I think my libc doesn't allow non-pointers in ioctl, and also doesn't
like low ioctl command values, so all communications between slmodemd
and slamr.ko fail.
After changing the ioctl to pass a pointer as argument, and adding an
arbitrary 100000 to every ioctl cmd issued, everything works.
Has this been addressed already?

Thanks.
