Get from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/Ubuntu/
the  slamr-2.6.28-16-generic.tar.gz and from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/linux-image-2.6.28-16-generic

Install with:
$ sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb
This kernel+modules is functional on your otherwise Karmic system. I'm
thus online now.
Reboot with 2.6.28-16-generic kernel and the drivers in
slamr-2.6.28-16-generic.tar.gz
will be functional thereunder.
Thus you don't have to reinstall 9.04
