John,

gnome_ppp is a graphical front end to wvdial.
But it uses its own configuration file. Run the gnome-ppp setup, which
will write a hidden file
in your home folder .wvdial.conf , where the leading "." hides files.

But we recommend that wvdial be used directly.  FIrst do an edit:
$ sudo  gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
removing the symbols ; < >
and putting in your personal info.

Then dialout with:
$ sudo wvdial
