An update on the issue:

 Looks like the following can be used to avoid rebuilding the Ubuntu
kernels 2.6.31-{16,17} to make the driver work:

There seems to be a conflict created by the module snd-pcsp which gets
loaded before the sound card is detected.  The Linux kernel docs
suggest adding the following option to the file
/etc/modprobe.d/options:

options snd-pcsp index=2

Reboot and see if the Agere modules start working.
It worked for me for the 11c11040 chip, maybe it will
work for the PCI express "0630" chip too.
