rather it is the snd-intel8x0m  driver.  With slmodemd  already
written to /usr/sbin/slmodemd,
it suffices to activate it with:
$  sudo slmodemd -c ITALY modem:1

Then open a 2nd console and the modem should be found by:
$ sudo wvdialconf
