Roland,
Your harsh criticism is not the best way to express gratitude to a
volunteer who has done a tremendous amount of work for a tremendous
number of people since Intel has ceased its modem development and
maintenance activities.
May I kindly suggest that you read
http://developer.intel.com/design/modems/support/FAQ.htm which
unfortunately carries no date? Do not fail to note that it addresses
all drivers, not only Linux which is even not mentionned !
I am the maintainer of the Linux driver repository

Please be a little more tolerant with somebody who not only gets no
income but pays the hardware used to serve us.
As President of Logikal Solutions, you certainly make (part of) your
living of selling your work, and have to pay the tools and salaries of
your employees.
Have you considered offering him a job with your Company? He may be
jobless, you know, in today's world.
Logikal Solutions might benefit from his very wide experience, and you
might find yourself, personally, having become one of the many who
support free Linux, not directly spending a cent on Linux development,
just creating the conditions under which one of your employees would be
happy giving some of his free time.

When I contacted him about the stuff not compiling for Karmic he emailed me
back and stated I had to contact HP, establish a support contract, then pay HP
for the work. He also stated that I should not expect others to work for
free, obviously not understanding that Linux is the domain of the cheap
bastard...nobody pays for it. If you don't want to work for free don't
volunteer to support a package/product.
I wish I still had the email, but I don't think I saved it.
The Intel drivers will not be ported to the new Linux kernel until someone
pays him to do it.

Are you talking about Phillipe Vouters?
I didn't know he had stated that... Could you provide references?

Subject: Re: Intel 537EP, openSuse 11.1, Kernel 2.6.29.1.1-pae. Driver
fails to compile.
The Intel drivers won't build on the Karmic Koala release of Ubuntu or any
release using that kernel. The person maintaining them wants to be paid
via HP before he fixes them. At HP rates it will be somewhere between
$10-15K.
Did you install the kernel header files for development? This line makes
me suspicious:
make: *** /usr/src/packages/BUILD/kernel-pae-2.6.29/linux-2.6.29: No such
file
Package dependencies are not correct on these modem driver packages. They
require a lot more to build than they do to install, but none of the build
packages are a dependency for install.

I would be grateful for advice.
Many thanks in advance.
