Roland's response doesn't fully represent the situation.

Philippe is a volunteer maintainer of the Intel-536-537 software,
which ceased to be updated by Intel some years ago. He began this
service some years ago, initially to maintain communication with a
distant relative whose PC has a Intel-537 modem. But Philippe
continues to give very good service to this List, updating the modem
code with major releases of major Linux distros

This is in addition to Phillipes full time job with HP, which itself
has been generally helpful in providing Linux printer drivers gratis.
But it is impossible with his volunteer time, to keep up with the
nuances of every kernel release of every distro.

But for users with c, such as Roland Hughes
<roland@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> which can charge there own company for
commercial services, there is a special situation. Phillipe has
permission from HP to workout their problem, provided HP (not Phillipe
directly) is paid for the time involved.
One such payment would of course benefit all Karmac users.

With the exception of the for pay Conexant modem software from
Linuxant.com , all other Proprietary modem software is not know
commercially serviced.

Philippe has participated for free in experiments, to try to adapt,
the Intel-537 code to still unsupported modems, most recently a
Silicone Instruments modem which has never had Linux service

We are indeed Fortunate to have Philippes
volunteer services, with regular updates for the major Linux distributions,
and Additionally the possibility of some commerical level support
through HP, when Philippe lacks further volunteer time.
