Daniel,

Have you installed the sl-modem-daemon package?
That would account for the /dev/ttySL0  ---> /dev/pts/N
and a failure
# slmodemd -c CANADA --alsa hw:0,6
error: alsa setup: cannot open playback device 'hw:0,6': Device or
resource busy.

Just in case do:
$ sudo apt-get remove sl-modem-daemon
as this function is NOT necessary for support through the snd-hda-intel driver

Incidentally under Ubuntu do:
$ sudo slmodemd -c CANADA --alsa hw:0,6
Then open a 2nd console of TAB for
$ sudo wvdial

Try initially without Stupid Mode
