Reid,

Minicom is ancient.  Use instead after drivers are loaded
$ sudo wvdialconf
The modem should be found.

Edit in your personal information with:
$ sudo gedit  /etc/wvdial.conf
removing the ;  < >  symbols

THen dialout with:
$ sudo wvdial
