Also the /dev/slamr0  port slamr needs to function (like all /dev) is
in volatile RAM space and won't exist when you reboot.
The minimal manual requisite is as root:
# mknod -m 600 /dev/slamr0 c 242 0
The load ungrab-winmodem & slamr drivers

There is a section in the Slamr.txt how to set automation scripts to do all this
Also SuSE may have a slamr or slmodem package providing automation scripts.
BUT the slmodemd it provides will be the old 2.9.9e  was likely.  This
can be checked with:
$ slmodemd --version
If necessary, copy the newer version 2.9.11 from modem/slmodemd  to
/usr/sbin/slmodemd and
# chmod +x   /usr/sbin/slmodemd
