Linux headers for Debian like distros are located through /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build a symbolic link to the actually linux-headers or linux-source folders, which are hugh. Most likey they are NOT included on a bootable CD, So you are blocked so long as you don't do a hard disk install. MarvS
Hi Marvin, Bjorn,Thanks for the above. The headers etc. are all there (I have the DVD version) so I did a make module in the directory where the ALSA15 was unpacked into. The kernel headers/source were found but it all ended in an error.
I have gzipped the output and attached it. Perhaps I need to patch something.
Thanks again for all your patience and help. Graeme.

Try dialout with # wvdial --config ./wvdial.conf For work under a CD/DVD foot you want to save the drivers and wvdial.conf to a USB stick drive, so the compile & configuration doesn't have to be repeated. MarvSHi Marvin, Thanks for the instructions. The agrsm-HDA-20080721.ALSA15.tar.bz tarball is for the Red Flag Linux kernel version 2.6.21.0-22 where my kernel is 2.6.24.4. The readme file says that the drivers can be rebuilt if the kernel headers are available but I don't seem to have any headers. Doing a find / -name 2.6.24 -print brings up a few hits but they are mainly module dirs. Knoppix is Debian based. Do you know where the header files are under Debian? /usr/src/linux doesn't seem to contain any header files either so I am up the creek so to speak. Not being able to access the internet with Linux also makes it a bit awkward in having to boot back and forth between Knoppix and Vista (I don't understand why users find Linux so hard compared to Windows/Vista. Linux is orders of magnitude easier to use than Windows/Vista, especially these days.) Is there any way around this do you know? BTW I have a persistent home dir on a USB stick so I can save everything I create. (or are you just starting from scratch?) Thanks, Bjorn.Hi Bjorn, I'm not having any luck at all yet but that is because I am currently running Knoppix 5.3.1 Live DVD so any changes I make are lost as soon as I reboot :-( Also, alsamixer reports version 1.0.16 when your check reports 1.0.15. I have downloaded the driver tarball for 1.0.15. Is it possible to modprobe the drivers with my live system? If so, what is the command please? With this live DVD sound doesn't work at all either; reports missing files etc. I will have to wait until I get Fedora 9 installed on my 4G usb stick and get back to a familiar distro to get it all working and permanent. I will be eagerly awaiting the final HOWTO and the driver tarball. Many thanks for all your help. I'm watching and trying what I can.
