REMARK: THE LINUXANT INSTALLER NEEDS AN INTERNET COMMUNICATION CHANNEL IN ORDER TO WORK ! IT IS OF NO RELEVANCE AND MISLEADING FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOTHING ELSE THAN A CONEXANT NOT-YET-WORKING MODEM, NO ENTERPRISE OR PRIVATE ETHERNET BASED LAN, NO ADSL, ...
THE CHICKEN AND THE EGG, YOU KNOW.
I HAVE ASKED LINUXANT SEVERAL TIMES TO WRITE IT IN FAT LETTERS.
GO ASK ... I AM TIRED.

Hi Antonio,

The packages linux-libc-dev and libc6-dev are already
installed. I can't find linux-686-smp anywhere, but I
did find linux-686. Where would I find the tarballs you
speak of?

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/archive/hsfmodem-7.68.00.12full/hsfmodem-7.68.00.12full.tar.gz

You might be inclined to run the cnxtinstaller to detect the package that you need

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/downloads-installer.php

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/archive/cnxtinstall.run

most of the files are here:

Mark,

scanModem reported that, but maybe you would need to
compile the generic tar from linuxant.
Note: /as scanModem informs

Compiling hsfmodem drivers does require linux-libc-dev
and libc6-dev packages, for kernels 2.6.24 and later
versions.
In not included on your install CD, search for them
at http://packages.ubuntu.com
For this part, guess the drivers are not SMP :(
No pre-built modules for: Ubuntu-8.04.1
linux-2.6.24-19-generic i686-SMP
compiling a source tarball is necessary. Download the
generic tarball and follow the directions.

Antonio

Thanks, both of you, for your quick responses. I
downloaded
and unzipped the file, but when I tried to run it, I
got the
following messages:

Selecting previously deselected package hsfmodem.
(Reading database ... 121700 files and directories
currently installed.)
Unpacking hsfmodem (from

however:

I found alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.17.4-1_all.deb at
the
linuxant site. Curiously, while it was installing, it caused the
volume
control daemon to die unexpectedly (maybe it replaces existing
ALSA driver
libraries?). I re-booted the machine and checked
the
volume control before installing hsfmodem. Here is the output
from my
second try:

Selecting previously deselected package hsfmodem.

I was a little concerned about the message
"No
pre-built modules", but I persisted. When I tried wvdialconf, I got the
following:
Editing `/etc/wvdial.conf'.
Scanning your serial ports for a modem.
Modem Port Scan<*1>: S0 S1 S2 S3
Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by
another
program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?

Please read the FAQ at

If you still have problems, send mail to

I'm prepared to go to wvdial-list, but first I
thought
I'd see if you had any insights.

Thanks!
Mark
