Yes, you should be able to do these steps with ALSA 1.0.16 as well.
You can do a make install and continue to follow the steps I outlined you.
Let me know when you're ready to continue. (i.e. your
/proc/asound/card0/codec#1 file is as I described earlier)

I also tried MarvS trick with the alsa-lib-1.0.17 folder. But doesn't change anything.
