You seem to the line problems.
Please read Jacques PostInstall Howto at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il
Like included therein, but within /etc/ppp/options, read the section
about decreasing MTU size.

I don't have the code expertise to comment on it being a general
2.6..N  problem,
except that many of us are not thus troubled.
