modem:1 and hw:1 are usually equivalent
But if hw:1 works, use it.
hw:0   is the audio card.

Put in your personal information with
$ sudo gedit  /etc/wvdial.conf
which should look like the following:

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttySL0
ISDN = 0
Phone = IPnumber
Username =  LoginName@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Password =  YourPassword
Carrier Check = no

Read wvdial.txt in Modem/DOCs about options that may help
