I'm getting the modem line as long as I do modprobe snd-intel8x0m.

slmodemd --country=USA --alsa modem:1
seems to fail, but 
slmodemd --country=USA --alsa hw:1
appears to work (see below).

Am I correct in assuming that if I blacklist, I'll free up resources and 
hw:modem1 will work?

wvdial initializes the modem, detects a carrier, but asks for a username when 
it''s already in the dialer defaults. What do I need to do to get it to read 
dialer defaults?

I hear no sound whatsoever, but it must be dialing since it's connecting and 
asking for a username.
